Cleveland Medical Mart Signs on Cleveland Clinic, GE Healthcare as Tenants

November 24, 2012

During the Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit at the Hotel InterContinental on the Cleveland Clinic main campus, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced that the Cleveland Clinic and GE Healthcare will be participating as tenants in the under-construction medical mart in downtown Cleveland.

The Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit brought more than 1,000 physicians, medical company executives and entrepreneurs from across the country to Cleveland.

Thomas Gentile III, president and CEO of GE Healthcare Systems, said the company will use its space at the medical mart for promoting several lines of business.

It will start with its breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and cardiology equipment and services, according to company officials.

“We also see the opportunity to be close to several world-class institutions,” Gentile said, mentioning in particular the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.

Martin Harris, CIO of the Cleveland Clinic, which will take space on the medical mart’s fourth floor — its information technology floor — said the Clinic will use its space to bring together suppliers of health care information technology ranging from diagnostic equipment to warehouse management software that is used to keep patient floors stocked.

Until now, the medical mart’s developer, MMPI Inc. of Chicago, has not disclosed corporate tenant signings. Only local nonprofit tenants, such as Cleveland State University and biotech assistance group BioEnterprise Corp., previously were announced as tenants.

Jim Bennett, senior vice president of MMPI, recently told Crain’s Cleveland Business that his company had signed leases from 25 tenants for 50,000 of the 95,000 leasable square feet in the medical mart building.

Bennett also told Crain’s that Stephen Lieber, president and CEO of the Chicago-based Health Information and Management Systems Society, had toured the construction site.

HIMSS has 50,000 members that work in health care information technology and related fields and had signed on to be a tenant at a similar, now-suspended medical mart project in Nashville.

A handful of innovation summit attendees toured the convention center complex as well, Bennett said.

The $465 million Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center complex is slated for completion next summer.
