Malaysia’s newest venue, the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) has signed an MOU with UBM Malaysia agreeing to host four events between 2019 and 2023 as well as a biennial event during the years 2019 to 2028. The specific events were not named, but the two companies did state that they expect the events will generate MYR261 million (US$63 million) in economic impact for the local economy. Last week, the 36th September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair (September Fair) opened with a record-breaking number of exhibitors. It featured more than 3,700 exhibitors from around the world. The event used both major venues in Hong Kong, AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). UBM India, UBM plc’s subsidiary, together with BolognaFiere launched the inaugural edition of Cosmoprof India at Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai, running from 10th to 11th September 2018. A total of 107 companies from 15 countries attended the two-day event. Earlier this week, Pico Thailand, the Thai-listed subsidiary of Pico Far East Holdings, released its financial results for the quarter ended 31st July 2018. Revenues in the quarter were US$13 million, an increase of 25% over the same quarter in 2017. However, the company’s profits in the quarter dropped 26% down to US$386,000. The company attributed the increase in revenues to a strong performance in its exhibition business and event marketing business. This week, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announced who will replace former chief executive Lionel Yeo who stepped down in May this year. STB has appointed Keith Tan as its new Chief Executive with effect from 29th October. Tan is currently the Deputy Secretary (Policy) of Singapore’s Ministry of Defence where Tan is responsible for defence policy, strategic communications, national education and “Total Defence”. C2 Melbourne was originally planned to be held from 17th to 19th October 2018, at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). The event was eventually cancelled following the sudden departure of the event creator and C2’s CEO Asia-Pacific Martin Enault. It is reported that Enault has cited health reason for his decision. Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) recently released its MICE statistics for the second quarter of 2018. In the quarter, a total of 327 MICE events were held in Macau, down 6 events compared with the same quarter in 2017. However, the total number of participants increased 1.7% to about 411,000 in the period. According to DSEC, a total of 316 meetings and conferences were held in quarter, 6 events more than the previous year.
