UBM Asia named Wolfram Diener as senior vice president, effective Nov. 1, and Zhang Xue Qiang as managing director of Shanghai UBM Sinoexpo International Exhibition Co Ltd (UBM Sinoexpo), effective Sept. 9. More people than ever before attended shows at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during fiscal year 2010-2011, with 5,969,789 coming through the doors of the venue, a 25-percent increase, compared with the prior fiscal year. The big uptick in attendance was attributed to an expanded portfolio of events, 1,235, that were also held during fiscal year 2010-2011, according to HKCEC officials. A record amount of hosted buyers, exhibitors and trade visitors were on hand at Reed Exhibitions’ CIBTM (China, Incentive Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition) Aug. 30-Sept 1 at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing, according to show officials. Reed Exhibitions’ decision to bring its SinoFoldingCarton show to Beijing for the first time this year paid off with an expanded showfloor spanning 20,000 square meters and 300 exhibiting companies, 22 of which were new. Now, attendees not only will be able to go to events at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in person, but they also will be able to visit the event online afterward. The virtual event service is offered by the center, and the first event to be made available online after the live event wrapped up was the Australian Business Events Expo, known as ABEE Online. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Food Expo broke attendance records in its 22nd year, with 380,000 visitors coming to the five-day fair, a 3-percent increase, compared with the 2010 event. The show was held Aug. 11-15 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and exhibitor records also were broken at this year’s event, according to HKTDC officials. UBM Asia’s Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair drew an 18-percent increase of attendees at its recent June event at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, with a record 22,452 visitors coming from 104 countries and regions, according to company officials. Of the 22,452 visitors, 42 percent were Hong Kong-based visitors, while 58 percent were from overseas, a growth of 30 percent, compared with last year’s June event. Reed Exhibitions’ Aluminium China broke all previous attendance records at its recent show, with 11,282 visitors from 83 countries and regions, a 25-percent jump from the 2010 edition. Of the visitors, 1,244 were international – 76 percent more than last year. In addition, 420 exhibitors were on the exhibit floor in July at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. New buyers at Global Sources’ Private Sourcing Events more than doubled for the first half of this year, according to company officials.
