Cobo Cares 2019 Season of Health and Wellness Events Is Underway

June 25, 2019

For the third year in a row, Cobo Center has kicked off its Cobo Cares program, which offers free exercise, networking and community engagement opportunities to local workers and residents in Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

Launched in early May, the 2019 Cobo Cares season offers 13 exercise activities at the convention center through October, including Zumba, yoga and workout classes coupled with opportunities to give back to local nonprofit agencies that support needy area citizens.

“The Cobo Cares program is a wonderful way to gather together and give back to our community while having some fun, too,” said Claude Molinari, general manager of Cobo Center. “We can get from 10 to 60 people at these events; and the local non-profit agencies set up a presence with information about what they do, how to donate and how to get involved.”

Cobo Cares outdoor activities are held at the facility’s outdoor terrace, Cobo Square; while indoor activities are located in the 30,000 square-foot, three-story glass atrium overlooking the Detroit River.

This year, the program will support local causes including Common Ground Sanctuary, Green Living Science, Alternatives for Girls, COTs, Detroit Public Schools, Eastern Market, Zumba with Ivy, Bees in the D, Michigan Humane Society, Green Living Science, Detroit Boxing Gym and Rock CF Foundation.

The first event of the season, Skyline Yoga with Citizen Yoga, was held May 11 and drew 15 participants. They contributed $100 in funds to Common Ground, a local 24-hour crisis services agency.

In 2018, Cobo Cares collected more than $2,500 in funds and hundreds of pounds of goods such as books, hygiene kits for the homeless and school supplies from the events. In September last year, Cobo Center volunteers partnered with Humble Design to help build tables and bookcases for families transitioning out of homeless shelters, and spent the day at the charity’s Pontiac warehouse to help with cleaning, repairing and renovating.

The 2018 season concluded with the annual Detroit Adopt-A-Child for Christmas program, which was sponsored by Cobo Center and the City of Detroit. The program paired thousands of local Detroit children with sponsors who gifted them Christmas presents including toys and warm clothes at a Christmas party held at the convention center.

The program’s local charity network is developed and managed by Cobo’s Green Committee, which represents the facility’s marketing, human resources, technology services and event services departments. Each season, the committee reaches out to community non-profits about coming to Cobo during the Cobo Cares events to meet the public, share information about their organizations and receive donations.

“Community engagement is a core value of our sustainability program, and partnering with local nonprofits is very important to us at Cobo Center,” Molinari said. “We have an exciting lineup of events this Cobo Cares season and encourage everyone to participate.”
