PCMA Brings Events Community Together Through Convening Leaders
Jan 27, 2021
Trying to serve as a guiding light in a challenging period, PCMA brought together more than 3,000 attendees in an unusual experience befitting the COVID era. Primarily a virtual event, PCMA’s Convening Leaders, held Jan. 11-15, also featured several hub cities where event professionals could enjoy an in-person experience while taking in the education. In a remarkable moment, a short musical performance was livestreamed from Singapore—where 300 persons were in attendance—before a general session. Halfway across the world in Las Vegas, Caesars Entertainment attempted a different, but perhaps… more

Joe Biden becomes the country’s 46th president at a time when the United States is mired in a pandemic and its related economic challenges. His proposed solutions, and their effectiveness, is surely how the first part of his presidency will be measured. The events, travel and hospitality industries are perhaps the most desperate for the dual recoveries to take place. The faster COVID-19 vaccines are distributed, the sooner airlines can fill middle seats, hotels can welcome more guests and convention centers can host large groups. The bigger business opens up for employment opportunities,… more
CES Paves the Way Forward with Its First Virtual Event
Jan 19, 2021
The first fully virtual CES put the spotlight on nearly 2,000 technology companies to see how the future is unfolding. In that regard, and in many other aspects, the event—proclaimed the largest digital industry event ever—was an unqualified success despite moving to an all-digital venue this year. “CES showed how the pandemic accelerated the arc of innovation and illustrated the resilience and innovative spirit of our industry,” said Gary Shapiro president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, the group behind the annual mega-event, in a statement. As trade shows have been forced… more
What To Expect at the First-Ever Virtual CES
Jan 06, 2021
Consumer Technology Association President Gary Shapiro’s wife is a doctor. In February 2020, she went in front of the organization’s board of directors and warned that the coronavirus would be nothing like anything we’ve experienced in our lifetime. At that moment, Shapiro knew that the next Consumer Electronics Show would be drastically different. “Everything she said turned out to be true,” Shapiro recalled on a video call on Microsoft Teams, among the suite of tools powering CES 2021, taking place Jan. 11-14. That knowledge allowed for nearly a year’s worth of preparing for an all-digital… more
Associations Cheer Stimulus Package, Seek Further Aid
Dec 28, 2020
As of Sunday night, associations across the travel and hospitality world were able to celebrate a stimulus package to boost the U.S. economy’s recovery from the pandemic. The bill offers much-needed assistance to airlines, hotels and tourism groups desperate for the world to re-open. “We can’t emphasize enough how desperately needed this funding is, or how much this action by Congress will add momentum to a global travel and economic resurgence,” said Shane Downey, vice president of government and community relations for the Global Business Travel Association, in a statement when Congress… more
Expo! Expo! Energizes the Trade Show Industry
Dec 18, 2020
The show for shows lived up to its billing, even if it looked different from past years. Expo! Expo!, International Association of Exhibitions and Events’ annual gathering, reunited more than 1,250 attendees in a virtual format to help spur trade shows toward a faster recovery. “None of us expected 2020 to be the year it’s been,” said IAEE 2020/2021 Chairperson Bob McClean, executive vice president and PPAI. “We’ve all been faced with learning new and challenging things, and now we’re becoming experts at virtual events.” Engagement levels suggest McClean is spot on, and also indicate how… more

trade show, trade shows

The Society of Independent Show Organizer recently collaborated not once, but twice, for its members in two valuable ways with Web Summit and its Founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave. In October, SISO Chair and Tarsus Group CEO Douglas Emslie interviewed Cosgrave as part of SISO’s high-value webinar series. The talk - "Is Virtual the new Emperor's clothes? - Lessons from taking a major event virtual” - focused on the transition of Web Summit – the mega-event for the tech industry that runs annually in Lisbon, Portugal – to a virtual event that ran Dec. 2-4. As part of the virtual event,… more
