Outdoor Retailer Consolidating Winter Market and Snow Show

August 22, 2019

Outdoor Retailer will not produce Winter Market, slated for Nov. 5-7, instead uniting the show with Snow Show to create one winter trade show in January. Called the Outdoor + Snow Show, the new show will be held Jan. 29-31 at Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

The news has been well received by Outdoor Retailer’s audience, who will now only have to mark their calendars for one show this winter. This is a return to the original format for Outdoor Retailer shows, which included one market in the winter and one during summer (the next Summer Market is scheduled for June 23-25, 2020, also in Denver).

“We care deeply about our community, and alongside [the Outdoor Industry Association], we’re working to support the diverse, evolving needs of the market in order to help the outdoor and snow industries thrive,” said Marisa Nicholson, Outdoor Retailer senior vice president and show director. “It’s our goal to bring our industry together and provide the most productive platform for success.”

Winter Market was originally positioned at the front of the buying system in response to community needs, according to company officials. But recent feedback led to the decision to create a consolidated show, a move that will better support all brands, retailers and representatives who attend, Nicholson added.

OIA is in partnership with Outdoor Retailer in this move. “Our job at OIA is to listen to our members, to be innovative and to support the timing of the trade shows to create the highest [ROI] and efficiency for the outdoor marketplace,” said OIA Executive Director Amy Roberts.

Exhibitors and sponsors that were already contracted for Winter Market in Salt Lake City in November will have space on hold for them at the January show. The annual Outdoor Retailer Innovation Awards will also shift to be held at Outdoor + Snow Show in January.

Outdoor Retailer, owned by Emerald Expositions, is the largest U.S. tradeshow and business event for the outdoor industry. The company canceled the 2019 edition of Interbike trade show last December, which was to host a bicycle trade area at November’s Winter Market. Emerald officials have said a smaller version of Interbike may return in 2020, but nothing has been confirmed.

TSNN will continue to follow this story, especially with new leadership in place at Emerald. Sally Shankland was appointed president and CEO of the company in May, as previously reported, and three new executive vice presidents were also brought on last month.
